Resort Valley Ranch Bio
Resort Valley Ranch West is located near the historic town of Foxton, nestled between the infamous “Cathedral Spires” and the Richmond Hill Corridor. Our property sprawls 1300 acres and is a part of 3600 acres of intact wilderness privately owned and protected by the Butterfield and Harris families. Originally homesteaded by the Corbin family, who were known in this area for having several other large ranches in Bailey and Pleasant Park. The Corbin family came here from North Carolina in the 1860’s. They brought a large herd of cattle with them and ended up stumbling upon a large pasture near present day Conifer, they thought to themselves “this looks like a pleasant place to park” and that’s where the name Pleasant Park originated. The winters up on Pleasant Park are brutal and unforgiving, the Corbins were forced to bring their cattle to lower elevation nearby. They stumbled upon this beautiful valley and to play off of their desperation in finding the place they named the creek flowing through “Last Resort Creek” as it was truly their last resort option. The headwaters of this creek start in the Richmond Hill Corridor of Conifer!
The Butterfield family (my great grandfather Olin J Butterfield) bought the ranch in the early 1940’s from Jack Corbin. He had a homestead in Sedalia and another ranch in Indian Park near the north end of the Rampart Range, a ranch our family still owns. His intent for this new property was for his sons to come home from the war (WW2) and manage Resort Valley Ranch. My grandparents Tom and Barbara Butterfield moved to the ranch along with my Great Uncle Rupert. They ran cows into the late 1950’s until my grandfather found the cattle unsustainable. My grandparent’s switched operations to a dude ranch and offered hourly horse rentals to the public until 1974. In 1974 the ranch acquired their first Morgan Horse Stallion (Teton) and Foxton Stables was founded. Until present day Foxton Stables has bred and sold purebred Morgan horses and the property has been leased to hunters yearly. Conservation Easements on the ranch began in the late 1990s, the whole ranch is now under a Conservation Easement with Mountain Area Land Trust. This protects this beautiful property and keeps it intact for future generations.
Me and my Father Jeff Butterfield moved to the family ranch in 2016 to take care of my grandparents. My grandparents lived happily and healthy in their own home up until they both passed away in 2020, after being married an amazing 70 years! My father and I not only took care of my grandparents but also took over a lot of the workload my grandfather carried up into his 80’s. We took over management of RV West Ranch in 2020 and co-own the property with my uncle Ken Butterfield.
In 2020 we started operating RV Ranch West as a tourist/ guest ranch. We listed 12 campsites on HipCamp (it’s like Airbnb for camping) and immediately drew a lot of attention! Not surprising with how peaceful and beautiful our property is. For the first few years we were listed as one of the top three highest rated camps on HipCamp! We have also offered our property up for use in the film industry, in 2023 we had a Toyota 4Runner commercial filmed here titled “Dear Nowhere”. Moving into the future we plan to continue these ventures and hope to have more content and movies created here, as well as open up this space to bring people together and create memories.
We have always had the dream of sharing this beautiful property with others, and we are so excited to offer our first few event/ wedding venues.
Stay tuned for updates and other projects. We have a lot planned.
